Location ![]() Location of Safari Zone in Kanto. |
The Safari Zone is a location where players can catch rare Pokémon, but cannot battle them. Instead, the player receives 30 Safari Balls and is able to either throw a ball at the Pokémon, throw bait, throw a rock, or run away.
The players will be escorted out of the Safari Zone after all 30 Safari Balls have been thrown or if the player has taken 600 steps. The Safari Zone Gate can be found North of Fuchsia City. Upon entering, the players will start in Safari Zone (Area 1).

Menu[]
While in the Safari Zone, the player's menu will be different: the number of steps and Safari Balls remaining will be displayed in the Top-Left corner. Furthermore, the Save option will be replaced with a Quit option, which allows the player to leave the park at any moment and return in front of the Safari Zone Gate within Fuchsia City.

Battles[]
- Rocks can be thrown to make the wild Pokémon angry. This will make it more likely to be caught, but it will also make the Pokémon more likely to run away. Multiple rocks can be thrown to further increase the chances of capture.
- Bait can be tossed to make the Pokémon stay around longer. On the downside, this makes them harder to catch.
Catching some of the rare Pokémon can be tough. It's not unusual to throw all 30 Safari Balls without catching a Pokémon, so don't get discouraged. Just save the game before entering the Safari Zone. If nothing good is caught, the save can be reloaded.
Shiny Pokémon and Volcarona[]
Within the Safari Zone, it is impossible for Shiny Pokémon and Volcarona to run away. It is still possible to run out of Safari Balls when trying to catch them though, so it is recommended to throw a few rocks to guarantee capture without risk.
These exceptions are not affected by Randomized Mode, so if the static Volcarona encounter is changed to something else then it will be able to run away. Similarly, if a randomized Volcarona appears in the grass or water then it won't be able to run away.
