Viridian River

Location

Location of Viridian River in Kanto.

Viridian River connects the Hidden Forest. You can enter this area next to the house with the man who gives to the TM for fly, west Celadon City (Route 16) using cut. Or you could enter through Route 2 (Before the Forest) and use Rock Climb on the ledge.

The river allows for rare overworld encounters with starter Pokémon. Each time the location is entered, there is a random chance for up to 3 different starters to appear. Only one of each type (Grass, Fire, Water) will appear each time. If an overworld encounter spawns, a fleeing sound can be heard when entering the area. The louder the sound the more Pokémon there are in the area. They will spawn at a random location on the map.

Due to a bug, each of the two warp tiles from Hidden Forest will spawn a different set of starters; the top tile will spawn the Kalos starters with an approximate 20% chance for each to appear, and the bottom tile will spawn the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh starters with each individual species having an approximate chance of 6% to appear.

If you enter the house on the Eastern side of the river, and then exit and return to the forest entrance, all of the spawned Pokémon will have teleported to the center of the map, below the two small islands.
