Location
Secret Forest Map
Location of Viridian River in Kanto.

Viridian River connects the Hidden Forest. You can enter this area next to the house with the man who gives to the TM for fly, west Celadon City (Route 16) using cut. Or you could enter through Route 2 (Before the Forest) and use Rock Climb on the ledge.

The river allows for rare overworld encounters with starter Pokémon. Each time the location is entered, there is a random chance for up to 3 different starters to appear. Only one of each type (Grass, Fire, Water) will appear each time, with each individual species having an approximate chance of 6% to appear. If an overworld encounter spawns, a fleeing sound can be heard when entering the area. The louder the sound the more Pokémon there are in the area.

Mew can also be found as an overworld encounter here provided the player has at least 10 Karma. If Mew appears, a different sound can be heard on entering the area compared to the starter Pokémon.
